Buenos dias a mi familia, mi novio y mis amigos.

I’m here, safe and sound. After one car ride, two planes, one Greyhound bus, and two more car rides, I made it to Mexicali. The family has welcomed me with open arms, of course. The oldest daughter, Yadira, has already taken me under her wing. She says, “Kelly, vente,” to me all the time. “Kelly, come,” and I just follow like her children do. I’m perfectly comfortable with this arrangement, even though we’re the same age. The family keeps encouraging me to do whatever I want because I am part of the family now. Since I’m only two days into this, I can’t say I’m quite comfortable plucking my eyebrows in front of everyone, but that day shall come!

Immediately upon arrival at the church on Saturday, we all sat down to discuss the English class. It was slow going, considering I barely speak Spanish. Pastor Arturo Luna first asked me when I want to start the class. Whoa! A few thoughts entered my mind at that moment. 1) I need a few weeks to get comfortable with my new life here, and 2) I don’t want to be calling all the shots. Sure, Arturo is probably curious about what I’ve prepared and if I have a plan for the class, but once we are able to communicate with each other, I hope to strategize with him a bit more. His other question was interesting: Is the class for Christians or for all people? Again, when we are better able to communicate, I am anxious to discuss how this ESL can be used to introduce people to Jesus. Also, I hope to discover his thoughts on evangelism in general and how he and other church members share Jesus with people.

In other news:

Arturo’s daughter Laura had her baby yesterday (Sunday). A baby boy, healthy and with a head of hair the likes of Grace. Gloria a Dios!

I am going to purchase a cell phone here eventually so I can call home. I’m living at the church with Pastor Luna’s daughter Laura and her husband Javier. Here is the address:

Small Group Girls, I already lost the journal you gave me! Oh well, I’ve only written in it once and no one here is going to understand it anyway. =)

Much love,

Kelly
